Then you will attack every fortified city and every choice city. You will cut down every good tree and stop up every spring. You will ruin every good piece of land with stones.’


He made skilfully designed devices in Jerusalem to shoot arrows and catapult large stones for use on the towers and on the corners. So his fame spread even to distant places, for he was wondrously helped until he became strong.


There was a small city with few men in it. A great king came against it, surrounded it, and built large siege works against it.


‘Therefore, this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria: He will not enter this city, shoot an arrow here, come before it with a shield, or build up a siege ramp against it.


For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the houses of this city and the palaces of Judah’s kings, the ones torn down for defence against the assault ramps and the sword:


For this is what the Lord of Armies says: Cut down the trees; raise a siege ramp against Jerusalem. This city must be punished. There is nothing but oppression within her.


Pharaoh with his mighty army and vast company will not help him in battle,  when ramps are built and siege walls constructed to destroy many lives.


Where can we go? Our brothers have made us lose heart,  , saying: The people are larger and taller than we are; the cities are large, fortified to the heavens.  We also saw the descendants of the Anakim  there.”


‘When you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it in order to capture it, do not destroy its trees by putting an axe to them, because you can get food from them. Do not cut them down. Are trees of the field human, to come under siege by you?


‘If a murder victim is found lying in a field in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who killed him,
