2 in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the books according to the word of the Lord to the prophet Jeremiah that the number of years for the desolation of Jerusalem would be seventy.

This fulfilled the word of the Lord through Jeremiah,  and the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days of the desolation  until seventy years were fulfilled.


In  the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, in order to fulfil the word of the Lord spoken through Jeremiah,  the Lord roused the spirit  of King Cyrus to issue a proclamation throughout his entire kingdom and to put it in writing:


Your holy cities have become a wilderness; Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.


The words of Jeremiah,  the son of Hilkiah, one of the priests living in Anathoth  in the territory of Benjamin.


Jerusalem and the other cities of Judah, its kings and its officials, to make them a desolate ruin, an example for scorn and cursing #– #as it is today;


‘Micah the Moreshite  prophesied in the days of King Hezekiah of Judah  and said to all the people of Judah, “This is what the Lord of Armies says: Zion will be ploughed like a field, Jerusalem will become ruins, and the temple’s mountain will be a high thicket.”


I will make this temple like Shiloh.  I will make this city an example for cursing for all the nations of the earth.” ’


All nations will serve him, his son, and his grandson until the time for his own land comes, and then many nations and great kings will enslave him.


For this is what the Lord says: ‘When seventy years for Babylon are complete,  I will attend to you and will confirm my promise concerning you to restore you to this place.


I will remove from the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem the sound of joy and gladness and the voices of the groom and the bride,  for the land will become a desolate waste.


How  she sits alone, the city  once crowded with people! She who was great among the nations has become like a widow. The princess among the provinces has been put to forced labour.


No human foot will pass through it, and no animal foot will pass through it.  It will be uninhabited for forty years.


So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek him by prayer and petitions, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.


Therefore, because of you, Zion will be ploughed like a field, Jerusalem will become ruins, and the temple’s mountain will be a high thicket.


Then the angel of the Lord responded, ‘How long, Lord of Armies, will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah that you have been angry with these seventy years? ’


‘Ask all the people of the land and the priests: When you fasted and lamented in the fifth and in the seventh months for these seventy years, did you really fast for me?


‘So when you see the abomination of desolation,   spoken of by the prophet Daniel,   standing in the holy place’   (let the reader understand),


‘When you see the abomination of desolation   , standing where it should not be’ (let the reader understand), ‘then those in Judea   must flee to the mountains.


The eunuch said to Philip, ‘I ask you, who is the prophet saying this about #– #himself or someone else? ’


Until I come,  give your attention to public reading, exhortation, and teaching.


Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy,  and blessed are those who hear the words of this prophecy and keep  what is written in it, because the time is near.
