When he did come out, he could not speak to them. Then they realised that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He was making signs to them  and remained speechless.


Motioning to them with his hand  to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. ‘Tell these things to James  and the brothers,’ he said, and he left and went to another place.


Paul stood up and motioned with his hand and said, ‘Fellow Israelites, and you who fear God, listen!


But when they recognised that he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours, ‘Great is Artemis of the Ephesians! ’


After he had given permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned with his hand to the people. When there was a great hush, he addressed them in Aramaic:  ,


When the governor motioned for him to speak, Paul replied, ‘Because I know you have been a judge of this nation for many years, I am glad to offer my defence in what concerns me.


Indeed, it is right  for me to think this way about all of you, because I have you in my heart,  and you are all partners with me in grace, both in my imprisonment  and in the defence  and confirmation of the gospel.


Among them are Hymenaeus  and Alexander,  whom I have delivered to Satan,  so that they may be taught not to blaspheme.


Alexander  the coppersmith did great harm to me. The Lord will repay him according to his works.
