Some time passed. David’s son Absalom  had a beautiful sister named Tamar,  and David’s son Amnon  was infatuated with her.


So Joab got up, went to Geshur, and brought Absalom  to Jerusalem.


However, the king added, ‘He may return to his house, but he may not see my face.’ So Absalom returned to his house, but he did not see the king.


‘Look,’ Absalom explained to Joab, ‘I sent for you and said, “Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? I’d be better off if I were still there.” So now, let me see the king. If I am guilty, let him kill me.’


When four  years had passed, Absalom said to the king, ‘Please let me go to Hebron to fulfil a vow I made to the Lord.


For your servant made a vow when I lived in Geshur of Aram,  saying, “If the Lord really brings me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the Lord in Hebron.” ’  ,


The king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber above the city gate and wept. As he walked, he cried, ‘My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son! ’


So David went there with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelite and Abigail, the widow of Nabal the Carmelite.


But his father had never once infuriated  him by asking, ‘Why did you do that? ’  In addition, he was quite handsome  and was born after Absalom.


‘You know the kingship was mine,’  he said. ‘All Israel expected me to be king, but then the kingship was turned over to my brother,  for the Lord gave it to him.


These  were David’s sons who were born to him in Hebron: Amnon was the firstborn, by Ahinoam of Jezreel; Daniel was born second, by Abigail of Carmel;


Absalom son of Maacah, daughter of King Talmai of Geshur, was third; Adonijah son of Haggith was fourth;


Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took over the entire region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites. He called Bashan by his own name, Jair’s Villages,  as it is today.


but the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites and Maacathites.  So Geshur and Maacath still live in Israel today.


The man’s name was Nabal, and his wife’s name, Abigail. The woman was intelligent and beautiful, but the man, a Calebite,  was harsh and evil in his dealings.


Then Abigail got up quickly, and with her five female servants accompanying her, rode on the donkey following David’s messengers.  And so she became his wife.


David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites,  the Girzites,  and the Amalekites.  From ancient times they had been the inhabitants of the region as you go towards Shur  , as far as the land of Egypt.
