13 So Gad went to David, told him the choices, and asked him, ‘Do you want three  years of famine to come on your land, to flee from your foes for three months while they pursue you, or to have a plague in your land for three days? Now, consider carefully  what answer I should take back to the one who sent me.’

During David’s reign there was a famine for three successive years, so David enquired  of the Lord. The Lord answered, ‘It is due to Saul and to his bloody family, because he killed the Gibeonites.’


‘Go and say to David, “This is what the Lord says: I am offering you three choices. Choose one of them, and I will do it to you.” ’


Elisha said to the woman whose son he had restored to life,  ‘Get ready, you and your household, and go and live as a resident foreigner wherever you can. For the Lord has announced a seven-year famine,  and it has already come to the land.’

‘Son of man, suppose a land sins against me by acting faithlessly, and I stretch out my hand against it to cut off its supply of bread,  to send famine through it, and to wipe out both people and animals from it.


and your strength will be used up for nothing.  Your land will not yield its produce, and the trees of the land will not bear their fruit.


I will bring a sword against you  to execute the vengeance of the covenant. Though you withdraw into your cities, I will send a pestilence among you, and you will be delivered into enemy hands.


But I say to you, there were certainly many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days,   when the sky was shut up for three years and six months while a great famine came over all the land.


The Lord will afflict you with wasting disease, fever, inflammation, burning heat, drought,  blight, and mildew;  these will pursue you until you perish.


The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will march out against them from one direction but flee from them in seven directions.  You will be an object of horror  to all the kingdoms of the earth.


‘The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt,  tumours, a festering rash, and scabies, from which you cannot be cured.


The Lord will afflict you with painful and incurable boils on your knees and thighs #– #from the sole of your foot to the top of your head.


They will besiege you within all your city gates until your high and fortified walls, that you trust in, come down throughout your land. They will besiege you within all your city gates throughout the land the Lord your God has given you.


Now consider carefully  what you should do, because there is certain to be trouble for our master and his entire family. He is such a worthless fool nobody can talk to him! ’
