But Israel stretched out his right hand and put it on the head of Ephraim, the younger, and crossing his hands, put his left on Manasseh’s head, although Manasseh was the firstborn.


So he blessed them that day, putting Ephraim before Manasseh when he said, ‘The nation Israel will invoke blessings by you, saying, “May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.” ’


When King David got to Bahurim, a man belonging to the family of the house of Saul was just coming out.  His name was Shimei son of Gera,  and he was yelling curses as he approached.


Abishai son of Zeruiah asked, ‘Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the Lord’s anointed? ’


People throughout all the tribes of Israel were arguing among themselves, saying, ‘The king rescued us from the grasp of our enemies,  and he saved us from the grasp of the Philistines,  but now he has fled from the land because of Absalom.


When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had come back,  they summoned him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel.  No one followed the house of David except the tribe of Judah alone.


Jeroboam built Shechem  in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went out and built Penuel.


You residents of Lebanon, nestled among the cedars, how you will groan  when pains come on you, agony like a woman in labour.


I will depart and return to my place until they recognise their guilt and seek my face; they will search for me in their distress.


I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me. For now, Ephraim, you have acted promiscuously; Israel is defiled.
