20 Then David got up from the ground. He washed, anointed himself, changed his clothes, went to the Lord’s house, and worshipped. Then he went home and requested something to eat. So they served him food, and he ate.

When David saw that his servants were whispering to each other, he guessed that the baby was dead. So he asked his servants, ‘Is the baby dead? ’ ‘He is dead,’ they replied.


His servants asked him, ‘Why have you done this? While the baby was alive, you fasted and wept, but when he died, you got up and ate food.’


So Joab sent someone to Tekoa  to bring a wise  woman from there. He told her, ‘Pretend to be in mourning: dress in mourning clothes and don’t put on any oil.  Act like a woman who has been mourning for the dead for a long time.


Mephibosheth,  Saul’s grandson, also went down to meet the king. He had not taken care of his feet, trimmed his moustache, or washed his clothes from the day the king left until the day he returned safely.


They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent David had pitched for it.  Then David offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings in the Lord’s presence.


Then King David went in,  sat in the Lord’s presence, and said, Who am I, Lord God, and what is my house that you have brought me this far?


Then Job stood up, tore  his robe, and shaved  his head. He fell to the ground and worshipped,


‘You speak as a foolish woman speaks,’ he told her. ‘Should we accept only good from God and not adversity? ’ Throughout all this Job did not sin in what he said.


Don’t be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil.


Let your clothes be white all the time, and never let oil be lacking on your head.


But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,


You didn’t anoint my head with olive oil,   but she has anointed my feet with perfume.


Wash, put on perfumed oil, and wear your best clothes. Go down to the threshing-floor, but don’t let the man know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.


Now therefore, please forgive my sin  and return with me so I can worship the Lord.’


Then Samuel went back, following Saul, and Saul bowed down to the Lord.
