‘If the Arameans are too strong for me,’ Joab said, ‘then you will be my help. However, if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I’ll come to help you.


However, if he should say, “I do not delight in you,” then here I am #– #he can do with me whatever pleases him.’  ,


Be strong! Let’s prove ourselves strong for our people and for the cities of our God.  May the Lord’s will be done.’


‘Be strong and courageous!  Don’t be afraid or discouraged before the king of Assyria or before the large army that is with him, for there are more with us than with him.


After I made an inspection, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people,  ‘Don’t be afraid of them.  Remember the great and awe-inspiring Lord, and fight for your countrymen, your sons and daughters, your wives and homes.’


They all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and throw it into confusion.


‘Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found in Susa and fast for me. Don’t eat or drink for three days,  night or day. I and my female servants will also fast  in the same way. After that, I will go to the king even if it is against the law.  If I perish, I perish.’

Is the land fertile or unproductive?  Are there trees in it or not? Be courageous. Bring back some fruit from the land.’ It was the season for the first ripe grapes.


Be alert, stand firm in the faith,  be courageous,  be strong.


Be strong and courageous;  don’t be terrified or afraid of them. For the Lord your God is the one who will go with you;  he will not leave you or abandon you.’

The men of the garrison called to Jonathan and his armour-bearer. ‘Come on up, and we’ll teach you a lesson! ’ they said. ‘Follow me,’ Jonathan told his armour-bearer, ‘for the Lord has handed them over to Israel.’


Jonathan said to the attendant who carried his weapons, ‘Come on, let’s cross over to the garrison of these uncircumcised men.  Perhaps the Lord will help us. Nothing can keep the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.’


David said to Saul, ‘Don’t let anyone be discouraged by him;  your servant will go  and fight this Philistine! ’


So Samuel told him everything and did not hide anything from him. Eli responded, ‘He is the Lord. Let him do what he thinks is good.’


Show some courage and be men, Philistines!  Otherwise, you’ll serve the Hebrews just as they served you.  Now be men and fight! ’
