34 They are still observing the former practices to this day. None of them fear the Lord or observe the statutes and ordinances, the law and commandments that the Lord had commanded the descendants of Jacob, whom he had given the name Israel.

‘Your name will no longer be Jacob,’  he said. ‘It will be Israel  because you have struggled with God  and with men and have prevailed.’


Then Jacob asked him, ‘Please tell me your name.’ But he answered, ‘Why do you ask my name? ’  And he blessed him there.


And he set up an altar there and called it God, the God of Israel.


God said to him, ‘Your name is Jacob; you will no longer be named Jacob, but your name will be Israel.’  So he named him Israel.


and said to Jeroboam, ‘Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the Lord God of Israel says: “I am about to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand. I will give you ten tribes,


‘Now you say, “Go and tell your lord, ‘Elijah is here! ’ ”


Elijah took twelve stones #– #according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, ‘Israel will be your name’   #– #


When they first lived there, they did not fear the Lord. So the Lord sent lions among them, which killed some of them.


They feared the Lord, but they also worshipped their own gods  according to the practice of the nations from which they had been deported.


However, these nations would not listen but continued observing their former practices.


Whoever lives with integrity fears the  Lord, but the one who is devious in his ways despises him.


‘Listen to this, house of Jacob – those who are called by the name Israel and have descended from   Judah, who swear by the name of the  Lord and declare the God of Israel, but not in truth or righteousness.
