Then the king of Assyria issued a command: ‘Send back one of the priests you deported.  Make him go and live there so he can teach them the requirements of the god of the land.’


But the people of each nation were still making their own gods in the cities where they lived and putting them in the shrines of the high places that the people of Samaria had made.


The Lord said: These people approach me with their speeches to honour me with lip-service, yet their hearts are far from me, and human rules direct their worship of me.


He answered them, ‘I’m a Hebrew.  I worship  the Lord,  the God of the heavens,  who made the sea  and the dry land.’


Leave them alone! They are blind guides.   And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.’


You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.
