I gave my back to those who beat me, and my cheeks to those who tore out my beard. I did not hide my face from scorn and spitting.


Let him offer his cheek to the one who would strike him; let him be filled with disgrace.


They devour   widows’   houses and say long prayers   just for show. These will receive harsher judgement.’


If anyone hits you on the cheek,   offer the other also. And if anyone takes away your coat, don’t hold back your shirt either.


Up to the present hour we are both hungry and thirsty; we are poorly clothed, roughly treated, homeless;


I do not mean that we lord it over your faith, but we are workers with you for your joy, because you stand firm in your  faith.


and every proud thing that is raised up against the knowledge  of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.


But I fear that, as the serpent  deceived  Eve  by his cunning, your minds may be seduced from a sincere and pure  devotion to Christ.


Now granted, I did not burden  you; yet, sly as I am, I took you in by deceit!


This matter arose because some false brothers  had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus in order to enslave us.


Now Hagar represents Mount Sinai in Arabia  and corresponds to the present Jerusalem,  for she is in slavery with her children.


In the same way we also, when we were children, were in slavery under the elements  of the world.


But now, since you know God,  or rather have become known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless  elements?  Do you want to be enslaved to them all over again?


For freedom, Christ set us free. Stand firm,  then, and don’t submit again to a yoke of slavery.


I myself am persuaded in the Lord that you will not accept any other view. But whoever it is that is confusing you will pay the penalty.


Those who want to make a good impression in the flesh  are the ones who would compel you to be circumcised   #– #but only to avoid being persecuted  for the cross  of Christ.


Their end is destruction; their god is their stomach; their glory  is in their shame; and they are focused on earthly things.


For we never used flattering speech, as you know, or had greedy  motives   #– #God is our witness   #– #
