For I have chosen  him so that he will command his children and his house after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just. This is how the Lord will fulfil to Abraham what he promised him.’


Then Elijah said to all the people, ‘Come near me.’ So all the people approached him. Then he repaired the Lord’s altar that had been torn down:


He removed the pagan altars and the high places. He shattered their sacred pillars and chopped down their Asherah poles.


He told the people of Judah to seek the Lord God of their ancestors and to carry out the instruction and the commands.


Then they went inside to King Hezekiah and said, ‘We have cleansed the whole temple of the Lord, the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the table for the rows of the Bread of the Presence and all its utensils.


Hezekiah concluded, ‘Now you are consecrated  to the Lord. Come near and bring sacrifices and thanksgiving offerings to the Lord’s temple.’ So the congregation brought sacrifices and thanksgiving offerings, and all those with willing hearts  brought burnt offerings.


Also, the power of God was at work in Judah to unite them  to carry out the command of the king and his officials by the word of the Lord.


So Manasseh caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to stray so that they did worse evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed before the Israelites.


But I have prayed   for you   that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen   your brothers.’
