‘What was the outcome? Tell me,’ David asked him. ‘The troops fled from the battle,’ he answered. ‘Many of the troops have fallen and are dead. Also, Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.’


So Joshua said to Achan, ‘My son, give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel,  and make a confession to him.  I urge you, tell me what you have done. Don’t hide anything from me.’


Once again the Lord called, ‘Samuel! ’ Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am; you called me.’ ‘I didn’t call, my son,’ he replied. ‘Go back and lie down.’


The messenger answered, ‘Israel has fled from the Philistines, and also there was a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are both dead, and the ark of God has been captured.’
