20 So David got up early in the morning, left the flock with someone to keep it, loaded up, and set out as Jesse had charged him. He arrived at the perimeter of the camp  as the army was marching out to its battle formation shouting their battle cry.

For the days will come on you   when your enemies will build a barricade round you, surround you, and hem you in on every side.


Joshua started early the next morning and left the Acacia Grove  with all the Israelites. They went as far as the Jordan and stayed there before crossing.


Early in the morning Samuel got up to confront Saul, but it was reported to Samuel, ‘Saul went to Carmel  where he set up a monument for himself. Then he turned around and went down to Gilgal.’


They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah fighting with the Philistines.’


Israel and the Philistines lined up in battle formation facing each other.


David’s eldest brother Eliab listened as he spoke to the men, and he became angry with him.  ‘Why did you come down here? ’ he asked. ‘Who did you leave those few sheep with in the wilderness? I know your arrogance and your evil heart #– #you came down to see the battle! ’


Immediately, David went to the place where Saul had camped. He saw the place where Saul and Abner son of Ner,  the commander of his army, were lying down. Saul was lying inside the inner circle of the camp with the troops camped around him.


That night, David and Abishai came to the troops, and Saul was lying there asleep in the inner circle of the camp with his spear stuck in the ground by his head. Abner and the troops were lying around him.
