21 Tagairtí Cros

They rejected his statutes and his covenant he had made with their ancestors  and the warnings he had given them. They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves,  following the surrounding nations the Lord had commanded them not to imitate.

Look, all of them are a delusion; their works are non-existent; their images are wind and emptiness.

‘Come, gather together, and approach, you fugitives of the nations. Those who carry their wooden idols and pray to a god who cannot save have no knowledge.

They lift it to their shoulder and bear it along; they set it in its place, and there it stands; it does not budge from its place. They cry out to it but it doesn’t answer; it saves no one from his trouble.

They are worthless, a work to be mocked. At the time of their punishment they will be destroyed.

They are both stupid and foolish, instructed by worthless idols made of wood!

Can any of the worthless idols of the nations  bring rain? Or can the skies alone give showers? Are you not the  Lord our God? We therefore put our hope in you, for you have done all these things.

Lord, my strength and my stronghold, my refuge in a time of distress, the nations will come to you from the ends of the earth, and they will say, ‘Our ancestors inherited only lies, worthless idols  of no benefit at all.’

For my people have committed a double evil: They have abandoned me, the fountain of living water, and dug cisterns for themselves #– # cracked cisterns that cannot hold water.

This is what the  Lord  says: What fault did your ancestors find in me that they went so far from me, followed worthless idols, and became worthless themselves?

Those who cherish worthless idols abandon their faithful love,

but as for me, I will sacrifice  to you with a voice of thanksgiving. I will fulfil  what I have vowed. Salvation  belongs to the  Lord.

What use is a carved idol after its craftsman carves it? It is only a cast image, a teacher of lies. For the one who crafts its shape trusts in it and makes worthless idols that cannot speak.

‘People! Why are you doing these things? We are people also, just like you, and we are proclaiming good news to you, that you turn from these worthless things  to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them.  ,

About eating food sacrificed to idols, then, we know that ‘an idol is nothing in the world’,  and that ‘there is no God but one’.

Be careful  that you are not enticed to turn aside, serve, and bow in worship to other gods.

But if your heart turns away and you do not listen and you are led astray to bow in worship to other gods and serve them,

They have provoked my jealousy with what is not a god; they have enraged me with their worthless idols. So I will provoke their jealousy with what is not a people; I will enrage them with a foolish nation.
