17 Isn’t the wheat harvest today?  I will call on the Lord, and he will send thunder and rain so that you will recognise what an immense evil you committed in the Lord’s sight by requesting a king for yourselves.’

The following day Moses said to the people, ‘You have committed a grave sin. Now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I will be able to atone for your sin.’


Like snow in summer and rain at harvest, honour is inappropriate for a fool.


Then the Lord said to me, ‘Even if Moses and Samuel  should stand before me,  my heart would not go out to these people. Send them from my presence, and let them go.


On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the Lord in the presence of Israel: ‘Sun,  stand still over Gibeon, and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.’


‘Now here is the king you’ve chosen,  the one you requested.  Look, this is the king the Lord has placed over you.


They pleaded with Samuel, ‘Pray to the Lord your God for your servants  so we won’t die! For we have added to all our sins the evil of requesting a king for ourselves.’


Those who oppose the  Lord will be shattered;  , he will thunder in the heavens against them. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth. He will give power to his king; he will lift up the horn of his anointed.  ,


Samuel said, ‘Gather all Israel at Mizpah,  and I will pray to the Lord on your behalf.’


When they said, ‘Give us a king to judge us,’ Samuel considered their demand wrong, so he prayed to the Lord.


But the Lord told him, ‘Listen to the people and everything they say to you. They have not rejected you; they have rejected me as their king.
