As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent someone to search for you. When they said, “He is not here,” he made that kingdom or nation swear they had not found you.


When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, ‘Is that you, the one ruining Israel? ’


So Ahab summoned all the Israelites and gathered the prophets at Mount Carmel.


Then Elijah said to the people, ‘I am the only remaining prophet of the Lord,  but Baal’s prophets are 450 men.


Then Elijah said to all the people, ‘Come near me.’ So all the people approached him. Then he repaired the Lord’s altar that had been torn down:


and took a hundred prophets and hid them, fifty men to a cave, and provided them with food and water when Jezebel  slaughtered the Lord’s prophets.


‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God of Armies,’ he replied, ‘but the Israelites have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they’re looking for me to take my life.’


So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, ‘May the gods punish me and do so severely  if I don’t make your life like the life of one of them by this time tomorrow! ’


A prophet approached King Ahab of Israel and said, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Do you see this whole huge army? Watch, I am handing it over to you today so that you may know that I am the Lord.” ’


The prophet approached the king of Israel and said to him, ‘Go and strengthen yourself, then consider carefully  what you should do, for in the spring  the king of Aram will attack you.’


One of the sons of the prophets  said to his fellow prophet by the word of the Lord, ‘Strike me! ’ But the man refused to strike him.


The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, ‘There is still one man who can enquire of the Lord, but I hate him  because he never prophesies good about me,  but only disaster. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.’ ‘The king shouldn’t say that! ’ Jehoshaphat replied.


Then he said, ‘Come with me and see my zeal  for the Lord! ’ So he let him ride with him in his chariot.


But they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They flung your law behind their backs and killed your prophets who warned them in order to turn them back to you. They committed terrible blasphemies.


Do not bow in worship to them, and do not serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,  bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children to the third and fourth generations  of those who hate me,


Because the Lord is jealous  for his reputation, you are never to bow down to another god.  He is a jealous God.


But I myself said: I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and futility; yet my vindication is with the  Lord, and my reward is with my God.


I have struck down your children in vain; they would not accept discipline. Your own sword has devoured your prophets like a ravaging lion.


Then the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to seize the scribe Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah, but the Lord hid them.


Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgement, for he is determined to follow what is worthless.


The statutes of Omri and all the practices of Ahab’s house have been observed; you have followed their policies. Therefore, I will make you a desolate place and the city’s  residents an object of contempt;  , you will bear the scorn of my people.’  ,


Faithful people have vanished from the land; there is no one upright among the people. All of them wait in ambush to shed blood; they hunt each other with a net.


‘Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the Israelites because he was zealous among them with my zeal,  , so that I did not destroy the Israelites in my zeal.


It will be a covenant of perpetual priesthood for him and his future descendants,  because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.’


And his disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal   for your house will consume   me.   ,


The Lord said to Moses, ‘You are about to rest with your ancestors,  and these people will soon prostitute themselves with the foreign gods  of the land they are entering. They will abandon me  and break the covenant  I have made with them.


They were stoned,  , they were sawn in two, they died by the sword, they wandered about in sheepskins, in goatskins,  destitute, afflicted, and mistreated.
