And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that {\i the king} said unto him, Have we made thee of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.\par


Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding:\par\tab Far be it from God, that he should do wickedness,\par\tab And from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.


If now {\i thou hast} understanding, hear this:\par\tab Hearken to the voice of my words.


Hear my words, ye wise men;\par\tab And give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.


Men of understanding will say unto me,\par\tab Yea, every wise man that heareth me:


Whoso loveth correction loveth knowledge;\par\tab But he that hateth reproof is brutish.


A scoffer seeketh wisdom, and {\i findeth it} not;\par\tab But knowledge is easy unto him that hath understanding.


The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge;\par\tab And the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.


Smite a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence;\par\tab And reprove one that hath understanding, {\i and} he will understand knowledge.


When the scoffer is punished, the simple is made wise;\par\tab And when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.


Hear instruction, and be wise,\par\tab And refuse it not.


Reprove not a scoffer, lest he hate thee:\par\tab Reprove a wise man, and he will love thee.


Give {\i instruction} to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser:\par\tab Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.


I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.


I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.


Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, that shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
