Then {\i God} is gracious unto him, and saith,\par\tab Deliver him from going down to the pit,\par\tab I have found a ransom.


He hath redeemed my soul from going into the pit,\par\tab And my life shall behold the light.\par


Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a vesture;\par\tab The waters stood above the mountains.


(The mountains rose, the valleys sank down)\par\tab Unto the place which thou hadst founded for them.


The cords of death compassed me,\par\tab And the pains of Sheol gat hold upon me:\par\tab I found trouble and sorrow.


Make haste to answer me, O Jehovah; my spirit faileth:\par\tab Hide not thy face from me,\par\tab Lest I become like them that go down into the pit.


For thou wilt not leave my soul to Sheol;\par\tab Neither wilt thou suffer thy holy one to see corruption.


The cords of Sheol were round about me;\par\tab The snares of death came upon me.


O Jehovah, thou hast brought up my soul from Sheol;\par\tab Thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.


What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit?\par\tab Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?


But thou, O God, wilt bring them down into the pit of destruction:\par\tab Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days;\par\tab But I will trust in thee.\par


Who by his strength setteth fast the mountains,\par\tab Being girded about with might;


I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing:\par\tab I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.


I said, In the noontide of my days I shall go into the gates of Sheol:\par\tab I am deprived of the residue of my years.


Behold, {\i it was} for {\i my} peace {\i that} I had great bitterness:\par\tab But thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption;\par\tab For thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.


Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?


then will I bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, to the people of old time, and will make thee to dwell in the nether parts of the earth, in the places that are desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I will set glory in the land of the living:


to the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves in their stature, neither set their top among the thick boughs, nor that their mighty ones stand up on their height, {\i even} all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.\par


The mountains saw thee, and were afraid;\par\tab The tempest of waters passed by;\par\tab The deep uttered its voice,\par\tab And lifted up its hands on high.


He stood, and measured the earth;\par\tab He beheld, and drove asunder the nations;\par\tab And the eternal mountains were scattered;\par\tab The everlasting hills did bow;\par\tab His goings were {\i as} of old.


And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.


For a fire is kindled in mine anger, And burneth unto the lowest Sheol, And devoureth the earth with its increase, And setteth on fire the foundations of the mountains.
