¹ H1419And there was a greatH6818cryH5971of the peopleH802and of their wivesH251against their brethrenH3064the Jews.

² H3426For there wereH559that said[H8802] H1121, We, our sonsH1323, and our daughtersH7227, are manyH3947: therefore we take up[H8799] H1715cornH398for them, that we may eat[H8799] H2421, and live[H8799] .

³ H3426Some also there wereH559that said[H8802] H6148, We have mortgaged[H8802] H7704our landsH3754, vineyardsH1004, and housesH3947, that we might buy[H8799] H1715cornH7458, because of the dearth.

⁴ H3426There wereH559also that said[H8802] H3867, We have borrowed[H8804] H3701moneyH4428for the king'sH4060tributeH7704, and that upon our landsH3754and vineyards.

⁵ H1320Yet now our fleshH1320is as the fleshH251of our brethrenH1121, our childrenH1121as their childrenH3533: and, lo, we bring into bondage[H8802] H1121our sonsH1323and our daughtersH5650to be servantsH1323, and some of our daughtersH3426areH3533brought unto bondage[H8737] H410already : neither is it in our powerH3027 H312to redeem them; for other menH7704have our landsH3754and vineyards.

⁶ H3966And I was veryH2734angry[H8799] H8085when I heard[H8804] H2201their cryH1697and these words.

⁷ H4427Then I consulted[H8735] H3820with myselfH7378, and I rebuked[H8799] H2715the noblesH5461, and the rulersH559, and said[H8799] H5378unto them, Ye exact[H8801] [H8678] H5383 [H8802] [H8675] H5375 [H8802] H4855usuryH376, every oneH251of his brotherH5414. And I set[H8799] H1419a greatH6952assembly against them.

⁸ H559And I said[H8799] H1767unto them, We after our abilityH7069have redeemed[H8804] H251our brethrenH3064the JewsH4376, which were sold[H8737] H1471unto the heathenH4376; and will ye even sell[H8799] H251your brethrenH4376? or shall they be sold[H8738] H2790unto us? Then held they their peace[H8686] H4672, and found[H8804] H1697nothing to answer .

⁹ H559Also I said[H8799] H2896, It is not goodH1697thatH6213ye do[H8802] H3212: ought ye not to walk[H8799] H3374in the fearH430of our GodH2781because of the reproachH1471of the heathenH341our enemies[H8802] ?

¹⁰ H251I likewise, and my brethrenH5288, and my servantsH5383, might exact[H8802] H3701of them moneyH1715and cornH5800: I pray you, let us leave off[H8799] H4855this usury.

¹¹ H7725Restore[H8685] H3117, I pray you, to them, even this dayH7704, their landsH3754, their vineyardsH2132, their oliveyardsH1004, and their housesH3967, also the hundredthH3701part of the moneyH1715, and of the cornH8492, the wineH3323, and the oilH5383, that ye exact[H8802]  of them.

¹² H559Then said[H8799] H7725they, We will restore[H8686] H1245them, and will require[H8762] H6213nothing of them; so will we do[H8799] H559as thou sayest[H8802] H7121. Then I called[H8799] H3548the priestsH7650, and took an oath[H8686] H6213of them, that they should do[H8800] H1697according to this promise.

¹³ H5287Also I shook[H8804] H2684my lapH559, and said[H8799] H430, So GodH5287shake out[H8762] H376every manH1004from his houseH3018, and from his labourH6965, that performeth[H8686] H1697not this promiseH5287, even thus be he shaken out[H8803] H7386, and emptiedH6951. And all the congregationH559said[H8799] H543, AmenH1984, and praised[H8762] H3068the LORDH5971. And the peopleH6213did[H8799] H1697according to this promise.

¹⁴ H3117Moreover from the timeH6680that I was appointed[H8765] H6346to be their governorH776in the landH3063of JudahH6242, from the twentiethH8141yearH8147even unto the twoH7970and thirtiethH8141yearH783of ArtaxerxesH4428the kingH8147, that is, twelveH6240 H8141yearsH251, I and my brethrenH398have not eaten[H8804] H3899the breadH6346of the governor.

¹⁵ H7223But the formerH6346governorsH6440that had been beforeH3513me were chargeable[H8689] H5971unto the peopleH3947, and had taken[H8799] H3899of them breadH3196and wineH310, besideH705fortyH8255shekelsH3701of silverH1571; yea, evenH5288their servantsH7980bare rule[H8804] H5971over the peopleH6213: but so did[H8804] H6440not I, becauseH3374of the fearH430of God.

¹⁶ H2388Yea, also I continued[H8689] H4399in the workH2346of this wallH7069, neither bought[H8804] H7704we any landH5288: and all my servantsH6908were gathered[H8803] H4399thither unto the work.

¹⁷ H7979Moreover there were at my tableH3967an hundredH2572and fiftyH376 H3064of the JewsH5461and rulersH935, beside those that came[H8802] H1471unto us from among the heathenH5439that are about us.

¹⁸ H6213Now that which was prepared[H8737] H3117for me dailyH259was oneH7794oxH8337and sixH1305choice[H8803] H6629sheepH6833; also fowlsH6213were prepared[H8738] H6235for me, and once in tenH3117daysH7235store[H8687] H3196of all sorts of wineH5973: yet for allH1245this required[H8765] H3899not I the breadH6346of the governorH5656, because the bondageH3513was heavy[H8804] H5971upon this people.
