The children of Israel traveled from Rameses to Succoth. There were about six hundred thousand on foot who were men, besides children.
I, YHWH, have spoken. I will surely do this to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against me. In this wilderness they will be consumed, and there they will die.”
But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.
“Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against YHWH in the company of Korah, but he died in his own sin. He had no sons.
These are the names of the men: Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
Consider then the goodness and severity of God: severity toward those who fell, but kindness toward you, if you continue in ʜɪꜱ kindness. Otherwise, you too will be cut off.
except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He will see it. I will give the land that he has walked on to him and to his children, because he has followed YHWH fully.”
This is the reason Joshua circumcised them: all the people who came out of Egypt, who were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness along the way, after they came out of Egypt.
Now I want to remind y’all–even though y’all already know it–that after the Lord saved a people out of the land of Egypt, he later destroyed those who didn’t believe.
