By night on my bed, I longed for him whom my soul loves. I longed for him, but I didn’t find him.


I was asleep, but my heart was awake. It is the voice of my beloved who knocks: “Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled; for my head is drenched with dew, and my hair with the dampness of the night.”


His watchmen are blind. They are all without knowledge. They are all mute dogs. They can’t bark— dreaming, lying down, loving to slumber.


Now while the bridegroom was delayed, they became drowsy and fell asleep.


He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you keep watch one hour?


Again he returned and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they didn’t know what to answer him.


“But y’all be careful, or y’all’s hearts will be weighed down with intoxication, drunkenness, and the worries of this life, and that day will come down on y’all unexpectedly like a trap.


When he got up from prayer, he went to the disciples and found them sleeping, exhausted from their sorrow.


Therefore he says, “Awake, you sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
