The chief priests and the scribes heard it, and began considering how they might kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.
But if we say, ‘Of human origin’”—they feared the crowd, for everyone considered John to be a true prophet.
The scribes and chief priests wanted to arrest him that very hour, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they feared the people.
But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.”
Therefore some of the people of Jerusalem said, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
At this, they tried to take him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
