One of the scribes came and heard them debating. Recognizing that Jesus had answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the greatest of all?”

A certain ruler questioned him, saying, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God for them, because they had not been baptized by John.
They said this to test him, so they would have something to accuse him of. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger.
For if the inheritance is based on the law, it is no longer based on the promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by a promise.
