We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless. When we are persecuted, we endure.
In the same way, the Lord ordained that those who proclaim the gospel should live from the gospel.
But I have used none of these things, and I don’t write these things that it may be done so in my case. In fact, it would be more excellent to die than allow anyone to make my boasting void.
What then is my reward? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge, so as not to abuse my authority in the gospel.
Or did I commit a sin in humbling myself so that y’all would be exalted as I preached the gospel of God to y’all free of charge?
When I was present with y’all and needed something, I never burdened anyone, because the siblings who came from Macedonia supplied my needs. In everything I kept myself from being burdensome to y’all, and I will continue to do so.
So how were y’all made inferior to the rest of the churches, except that I myself did not burden y’all? Forgive me for this wrong, y’all!
For y’all remember, siblings, our labor and hardship. By working night and day and not burdening y’all, we preached the gospel of God to y’all.
