“Assemble and hear, O sons of Jacob, and hearken to Israel your father.


If not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”


“Remember that my life is a breath; my eye will never again see good.


He asked life of thee; thou gavest it to him, length of days for ever and ever.


There are many who say, “O that we might see some good! Lift up the light of thy countenance upon us, O Lord!”


With long life I will satisfy him, and show him my salvation.


My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.


And now, O sons, listen to me, and be attentive to the words of my mouth.


The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.


The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.


I searched with my mind how to cheer my body with wine—my mind still guiding me with wisdom—and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the sons of men to do under heaven during the few days of their life.
