Then those of Israelite descent separated themselves from all foreigners, and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their ancestors.


No one who conceals transgressions will prosper, but one who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.


you that burn with lust among the oaks, under every green tree; you that slaughter your children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks?


Thus says the Lord concerning this people: Truly they have loved to wander, they have not restrained their feet; therefore the Lord does not accept them, now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins.


We acknowledge our wickedness, O Lord, the iniquity of our ancestors, for we have sinned against you.


For long ago you broke your yoke and burst your bonds, and you said, “I will not serve!” On every high hill and under every green tree you sprawled and played the whore.

The Lord said to me in the days of King Josiah: Have you seen what she did, that faithless one, Israel, how she went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and played the whore there?


Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but, in the stubbornness of their evil will, they walked in their own counsels, and looked backward rather than forward.


yet they did not listen to me, or pay attention, but they stiffened their necks. They did worse than their ancestors did.


But you trusted in your beauty, and played the whore because of your fame, and lavished your whorings on any passer-by.


I will return again to my place until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face. In their distress they will beg my favor:


You must demolish completely all the places where the nations whom you are about to dispossess served their gods, on the mountain heights, on the hills, and under every leafy tree.
