While Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counselor, from his city Giloh. The conspiracy grew in strength, and the people with Absalom kept increasing.


Moreover, whom should I serve? Should it not be his son? Just as I have served your father, so I will serve you.”


Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Go in to your father's concubines, the ones he has left to look after the house; and all Israel will hear that you have made yourself odious to your father, and the hands of all who are with you will be strengthened.”


The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and his anointed, saying,


Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, or they will increase and, in the event of war, join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.”


No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel, can avail against the Lord.


Ha! You who hide a plan too deep for the Lord, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”


Take counsel together, but it shall be brought to naught; speak a word, but it will not stand, for God is with us.


When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus in order to bring about his death.
