He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.’


Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided for this holy temple:


‘He has alienated my family from me; my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.


My zeal wears me out, for my enemies ignore your words.


Those who want to kill me set their traps, those who would harm me talk of my ruin; all day long they scheme and lie.


All who pass by have plundered him; he has become the scorn of his neighbours.


For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: ‘The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.’
