When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognise him; they began to weep aloud, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads.


‘Make a bronze basin, with its bronze stand, for washing. Place it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water in it.


Lord, you are the hope of Israel; all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the Lord, the spring of living water.


Let him bury his face in the dust – there may yet be hope.
