in this wilderness your bodies will fall – every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me.


But you – your bodies will fall in this wilderness.


These are the ones counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho.


‘Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord, but he died for his own sin and left no sons.


Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.


And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?


Now this is why he did so: all those who came out of Egypt – all the men of military age – died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt.
