And again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.


I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:


Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen.


For it came to pass, when David was in Edom, and Jo´ab the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain, after he had smitten every male in Edom;


And God stirred him up another adversary, Rezon the son of Eli´adah, which fled from his lord Hadade´zer king of Zobah:


Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the Lord, that he might perform his saying, which the Lord spake by Ahi´jah the Shi´lonite unto Jerobo´am the son of Nebat.


And the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, and the spirit of Til´gath–pilne´ser king of Assyria, and he carried them away, even the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manas´seh, and brought them unto Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, unto this day.


And the Lord of hosts shall stir up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Mid´i-an at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod was upon the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt.


O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.


Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.


And Edom shall be a possession, Se´ir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly.


Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the Lord have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before the Lord; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the Lord, saying, Go, serve other gods.
