Esav hated Ya`akov because of the blessing with which his father blessed him. Esav said in his heart, *The days of mourning for my father are at hand. Then I will kill my brother Ya`akov.*


The messengers returned to Ya`akov, saying, *We came to your brother Esav. Not only that, but he comes to meet you, and four hundred men with him.*


I am for shalom, but when I speak, they are for war.


Thus says the LORD: *For three transgressions of Edom, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he pursued his brother with the sword, and cast off all pity, and his anger raged continually, and he kept his wrath forever;


Edom said to him, You shall not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against you.


Thus Edom refused to give Yisra'el passage through his border: why Yisra'el turned away from him.
