Jesus meant that Lazarus was dead. But Jesus’ followers thought Jesus meant that Lazarus was really sleeping.
Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
However, Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He referred to falling into a refreshing and natural sleep.
Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but they thought that he spake of taking rest in sleep.
They thought Jesus meant that Lazarus was in a deep sleep, but Jesus had spoken about Lazarus’ death.
But Jesus had spoken about his death. Yet they thought that he spoke about the repose of sleep.
But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.
Jesus said, “Go away. The girl is not dead. She is only asleep.” But the people laughed at Jesus.
All the people were crying and feeling sad because the girl was dead. But Jesus said, “Don’t cry. She is not dead; she is only sleeping.”
After Jesus said these things, he said, “Our friend Lazarus is now sleeping. But I am going there to wake him.”
The followers answered, “But Lord, if he can sleep, he will be well.”
So then Jesus said clearly, “Lazarus is dead.
