The Philistine (Goliath) came out every morning and evening and stood before the Israelite army. Goliath made fun of Israel like this for 40 days.
But David said to Saul, “I, your servant, was taking care of my father’s sheep. A lion and a bear came and took a sheep from the flock.
Saul kept David with him from that day on. Saul did not let David go back home to his father.
