So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Messiah, fourteen generations.


For Herod had arrested John, chained  him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,


When he heard that John had been arrested,  he withdrew into Galilee.


Then John’s disciples came to him, saying, ‘Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast? ’


For  Herod himself had given orders to arrest John and to chain  him in prison on account of Herodias,  his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her.


But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch  because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the evil things he had done,


Herod the tetrarch  heard about everything that was going on.  He was perplexed, because some said that John had been raised from the dead,


When Jesus  learned that the Pharisees  had heard he was making  and baptising more disciples than John
