When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognised them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke harshly to them. ‘Where do you come from? ’ he asked. ‘From the land of Canaan to buy food,’ they replied.
He saw them straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Very early in the morning he came towards them walking on the sea and wanted to pass by them.
But they urged him, ‘Stay with us, because it’s almost evening, and now the day is almost over.’ So he went in to stay with them.
