Joshua and the Israelites struck down the following kings of the land beyond the Jordan to the west, from Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon to Mount Halak,  which ascends towards Seir (Joshua gave their land as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel according to the land allotted to each tribe:

and the Horites  in the mountains of Seir, as far as El-paran  by the wilderness.


Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the territory of Edom.


These are the sons of Seir the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,


chief Dishon, chief Ezer, and chief Dishan. These are the chiefs among the Horites, clan by clan,  in the land of Seir.


So Esau (that is, Edom) lived in the mountains of Seir.


‘Then we turned back and headed for the wilderness by way of the Red Sea,  as the Lord had told me, and we travelled round the hill country of Seir for many days.


Command the people: You are about to travel through the territory of your brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so be very careful.


from Mount Halak,  which ascends to Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon at the foot of Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings and struck them down, putting them to death.


So Joshua took the entire land, in keeping with all that the Lord had told Moses. Joshua then gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to the land allotted to each tribe. After this, the land had rest from war.


The priests carrying the ark of the Lord’s covenant stood firmly on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan,  while all Israel crossed on dry ground until the entire nation had finished crossing the Jordan.
