There was a famine in the land,  so Abram went down to Egypt to stay there for a while because the famine in the land was severe.


Then the Lord said to Abram,  ‘Know this for certain: your offspring will be resident foreigners  for four hundred years  in a land that does not belong to them and will be enslaved and oppressed.


Now the famine in the land was severe.


You can settle in the land of Goshen  and be near me #– #you, your children, and your grandchildren, your flocks, your herds, and all you have.


you are to say, “Your servants, both we and our ancestors, have raised livestock  from our youth until now.” Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, since all shepherds are detestable to Egyptians.’


Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Now that your father and brothers have come to you,


For this is what the Lord God  says: ‘At first my people went down to Egypt to reside there, then Assyria oppressed them without cause.


Now a famine and great suffering came over all of Egypt and Canaan,  and our ancestors could find no food.


God spoke in this way: His descendants would be strangers in a foreign country, and they would enslave and oppress them for four hundred years.


You are to respond by saying in the presence of the Lord your God: My father was a wandering Aramean.  He went down to Egypt with a few people and resided there as a foreigner.  There he became a great, powerful, and populous nation.
