And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the striving of the children of Israel, and because they tempted Jehovah, saying, Is Jehovah among us, or not?
and now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are built up; yea, they tempt God, and escape.\par
Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, Teacher, we would see a sign from thee.
And there came unto him Pharisees, trying him, and saying, Is it lawful {\i for a man} to put away his wife for every cause?
And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might ensnare him in {\i his} talk.
But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, {\cf6 Why make ye trial of me, ye hypocrites?
On that day there came to him Sadducees, saying that there is no resurrection: and they asked him,
But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, {\cf6 Why make ye trial of me? bring me a denarius, that I may see it.}
And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with the sinners and publicans, said unto his disciples, {\i How is it} that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and made trial of him, saying, Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
Jesus therefore said unto him, {\cf6 Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will in no wise believe.}
They said therefore unto him, What then doest thou for a sign, that we may see, and believe thee? what workest thou?
And this they said, trying him, that they might have {\i whereof} to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.
But Peter {\i said} unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to try the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them that have buried thy husband are at the door, and they shall carry thee out.
Neither let us make trial of the Lord, as some of them made trial, and perished by the serpents.
