When the king heard what the man of God cried out against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him!” But the hand that he stretched out against him withered so that he could not draw it back to himself.


For the Lord has poured out upon you a spirit of deep sleep; he has closed your eyes (the prophets) and covered your heads (the seers).


Who would fashion a god or cast an image that can do no good?


elders and dignitaries are the head, and prophets who teach lies are the tail,


Thus says the Lord: Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word,


Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord.


See, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, says the Lord, and who tell them and who lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when I did not send them or command them, so they do not profit this people at all, says the Lord.


Thus says the Lord God: Alas for the senseless prophets who follow their own spirit and have seen nothing!


Mortal, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: To the shepherds—thus says the Lord God: Woe, you shepherds of Israel who have been feeding yourselves! Should not shepherds feed the sheep?


For the teraphim utter nonsense, and the diviners see lies; the dreamers tell false dreams and give empty consolation. Therefore the people wander like sheep; they suffer for lack of a shepherd.


Then the Lord said to me: “Take once more the implements of a worthless shepherd.


“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in you stop them.


“Woe to you, blind guides who say, ‘Whoever swears by the sanctuary is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by the oath.’


“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they might not look with their eyes and understand with their heart and turn— and I would heal them.”


Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see may see and those who do see may become blind.”


What then? Israel has not achieved what it was pursuing. The elect have achieved it, but the rest were hardened,


Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “no idol in the world really exists” and that “there is no God but one.”


See, a time is coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your ancestor’s family.
