Then the Lord said, “My spirit shall not abide in mortals forever, for they are flesh; their days shall be one hundred twenty years.”


because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God but transgressed his covenant—all that Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded; they neither listened nor obeyed.


“But they, our ancestors, acted presumptuously and stiffened their necks and did not obey your commandments;


If your children sinned against him, he delivered them into the power of their transgression.


The Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen to you, in order that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.”


Woe to the rebellious children, says the Lord, who carry out a plan but not mine; who make an alliance but against my will, adding sin to sin;


For they are a rebellious people, faithless children, children who will not hear the instruction of the Lord;


Who gave up Jacob to the spoiler and Israel to the robbers? Was it not the Lord, against whom they sinned, in whose ways they would not walk, and whose law they would not obey?


So I have told you today, but you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God in anything that he sent me to tell you.


Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but, in the stubbornness of their evil will, they walked in their own counsels and looked backward rather than forward.


But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me; not one of them cast away the detestable things on which their eyes feasted, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I thought I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.


Because they have not listened to him, my God will reject them; they shall become wanderers among the nations.


“But if you will not obey me and do not observe all these commandments,


In past generations he allowed all peoples to follow their own ways,


But God turned away from them and handed them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘Did you offer to me slain victims and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?


Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves.


But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; they said, “No! We are determined to have a king over us,
