When he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the Lord and praise him in holy splendor, as they went before the army, saying, “Give thanks to the Lord, for his steadfast love endures forever.”


As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set an ambush against the Ammonites, Moab, and Mount Seir who had come against Judah, so that they were routed.


The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish.


then the flood would have swept us away; the torrent would have gone over us;


For dogs are all around me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they bound my hands and feet.


and they will be terrified. Pangs and agony will seize them; they will be in anguish like a woman in labor. They will look aghast at one another; their faces will be aflame.


While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people.


At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a rebel? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me.


Then all the city was aroused, and the people rushed together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut.


Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death so that we would rely not on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.
