David was told that Ahithophel was among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, “O Lord, I pray you, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.”

When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and went off home to his own city. He set his house in order and hanged himself; he died and was buried in the tomb of his father.

Then his wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, “Let a pole fifty cubits high be made, and in the morning tell the king to have Mordecai hung on it; then go with the king to the banquet in good spirits.” This advice pleased Haman, and he had the pole made.

So they hung Haman on the pole that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the anger of the king abated.

but when Esther came before the king, he gave orders in writing that the wicked plot that he had devised against the Jews should come upon his own head and that he and his sons should be hung on the pole.

But you do see! Indeed, you note trouble and grief, that you may take it into your hands; the helpless commit themselves to you; you have been the helper of the orphan.

The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

The Lord lifts up the downtrodden; he casts the wicked to the ground.

with the pure you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you show yourself shrewd.

Father of orphans and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.

The Lord tears down the house of the proud but maintains the widow’s boundaries.

The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what they stumble over.

Leave your orphans; I will keep them alive, and let your widows trust in me.

Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses; we will say no more, ‘Our God,’ to the work of our hands. In you the orphan finds mercy.”

Then I will draw near to you for judgment; I will be swift to bear witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired workers in their wages, the widow, and the orphan, against those who thrust aside the alien and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,”

Rejoice before the Lord your God—you and your sons and your daughters, your male and female slaves, the Levites resident in your towns, as well as the strangers, the orphans, and the widows who are among you—at the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name.

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
