On the eighth day he sent the people away, and they blessed the king and went to their tents joyful and in good spirits because of all the goodness that the Lord had shown to his servant David and to his people Israel.


Honor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his place.


So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.”


And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.


Therefore the Jews of the villages, who live in the open towns, hold the fourteenth day of the month of Adar as a day for gladness and feasting, a holiday on which they send gifts of food to one another.


as the days on which the Jews gained relief from their enemies and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday, that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and presents to the poor.


Let Israel be glad in its Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.


For you are the glory of their strength; by your favor our horn is exalted.


A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones.


Divide your means seven ways, or even eight, for you do not know what disaster may happen on earth.


There is nothing better for mortals than to eat and drink and find enjoyment in their toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God,


moreover, it is God’s gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil.

Go, eat your bread with enjoyment and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has long ago approved what you do.

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my whole being shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.


O children of Zion, be glad, and rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has given the early rain for your vindication; he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before.


and every cooking pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holy to the Lord of hosts, so that all who sacrifice may come and use them to boil the flesh of the sacrifice. And there shall no longer be traders in the house of the Lord of hosts on that day.


So give as alms those things that are within and then everything will be clean for you.


for during a severe ordeal of affliction their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.


even though I, too, have reason for confidence in the flesh. If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more:


and the inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and celebrate and exchange presents, because these two prophets tormented the inhabitants of the earth.


Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your sight, for we have come on a feast day. Please give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.’ ”
