“If I have rejoiced at the ruin of those who hated me or exulted when evil overtook them—


They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright; they are gracious, merciful, and righteous.


For the enemy has pursued me, crushing my life to the ground, making me sit in darkness like those long dead.


They will collapse and fall, but we shall rise and stand upright.


The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?


Do not let my treacherous enemies rejoice over me or those who hate me without cause wink the eye.


The wicked borrow and do not pay back, but the righteous are generous and keep giving;


though we stumble, we shall not fall headlong, for the Lord holds us by the hand.


For I pray, “Only do not let them rejoice over me, those who boast against me when my foot slips.”


For the Lord God is a sun and shield; he bestows favor and honor. No good thing does the Lord withhold from those who walk uprightly.


Light dawns for the righteous and joy for the upright in heart.


O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!


saying to the prisoners, “Come out,” to those who are in darkness, “Show yourselves.” They shall feed along the ways; on all the bare heights shall be their pasture;


Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the voice of his servant, who walks in darkness and has no light, yet trusts in the name of the Lord and relies upon his God?


The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined.


Israel was a laughingstock for you, though he was not caught among thieves, but whenever you spoke of him you shook your head!


Though you rejoice, though you exult, O plunderers of my heritage, though you frisk about like a heifer on the grass and neigh like stallions,

therefore thus says the Lord God: I am speaking in my hot jealousy against the rest of the nations and against all Edom, who, with wholehearted joy and utter contempt, took my land as their possession, because of its pasture, to plunder it.


On that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old,


But you should not have gloated over your brother on the day of his misfortune; you should not have rejoiced over the people of Judah on the day of their ruin; you should not have boasted on the day of distress.


Writhe and groan, O daughter Zion, like a woman in labor, for now you shall go forth from the city and camp in the open country; you shall go to Babylon. There you shall be rescued; there the Lord will redeem you from the hands of your enemies.


Then my enemies will see, and shame will cover those who said to me, “Where is the Lord your God?” My eyes will see their downfall; now they will be trodden down like the mire of the streets.


On that day the Lord will shield the inhabitants of Jerusalem so that the feeblest among them on that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the angel of the Lord, at their head.


But for you who revere my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.


the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.”


Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy.


Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”


to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’


For it is the God who said, “Light will shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.


persecuted but not forsaken, struck down but not destroyed,


And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb.


And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
