Then Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up and struck him down and killed him, and he was buried at his own house near the wilderness.


“Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist, yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.


As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind?


And they said, “Some say John the Baptist but others Elijah and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”


For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him, and even after you saw it you did not change your minds and believe him.


Therefore, bear fruit worthy of repentance,


and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”


As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way,


And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,


When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind?


beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.”


And now, as you see, the Lord has kept me alive, as he said, these forty-five years since the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses, while Israel was journeying through the wilderness, and here I am today, eighty-five years old.


The descendants of Hobab the Kenite, Moses’s father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad. Then they went and settled with the Amalekites.
