On that day every place where there used to be a thousand vines, worth a thousand shekels of silver, will become briers and thorns.


Yet I planted you as a choice vine from the purest stock. How then did you turn degenerate and become a wild vine?


Then I said, “Ah Lord God! They are saying of me, ‘Is he not a maker of allegories?’ ”


And he told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow.


“What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’


“Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenants and went away.


When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce.


“For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them;


So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”


It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch.


And he called them to him and spoke to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan?


He began to teach them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them:


A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant region, and there he squandered his wealth in dissolute living.


So he said, “A nobleman went to a distant region to receive royal power for himself and then return.


They asked him, “Where do you want us to make preparations for it?”


He said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but to others I speak in parables, so that ‘looking they may not perceive and hearing they may not understand.’


He is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai and with our ancestors, and he received living oracles to give to us.
