For I hate divorce, says the Lord, the God of Israel, and covering one’s garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. So take heed to yourselves and do not be faithless.


Then the disciples approached and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?”


The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test Jesus they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.


Some Pharisees came to him, and to test him they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?”


and one of them, an expert in the law, asked him a question to test him.


“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in you stop them.


But the Pharisees were saying, “By the ruler of the demons he casts out the demons.”


He left that place and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan. And crowds again gathered around him, and, as was his custom, he again taught them.


He answered them, “What did Moses command you?”


The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, asking him for a sign from heaven, to test him.


And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out—beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”


Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.


The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they ridiculed him.


The Pharisees and their scribes were complaining to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”


The scribes and the Pharisees were watching him to see whether he would cure on the Sabbath, so that they might find grounds to bring an accusation against him.


But the Pharisees and the experts in the law, not having been baptized by him, rejected God’s purpose for themselves.)


So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs.


Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where Jesus was should let them know, so that they might arrest him.


The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering such things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent temple police to arrest him.


Has any one of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him?


They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.


We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents.
