As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until he has mercy upon us.


“Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.


Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their parents.

Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.


Both prophet and priest are ungodly; even in my house I have found their wickedness, says the Lord.

With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back; I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path where they shall not stumble, for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.


The descendants of Jonadab son of Rechab have carried out the command that their ancestor gave them, but this people has not obeyed me.


Its priests have done violence to my teaching and have profaned my holy things; they have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they taught the difference between the unclean and the clean, and they have disregarded my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.


Ephraim has said, “Ah, I am rich; I have gained wealth for myself; in all of my gain no offense has been found in me that would be sin.”


My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge! Because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me; and since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.


Hear this, O priests! Give heed, O house of Israel! Listen, O house of the king! For the judgment pertains to you, for you have been a snare at Mizpah and a net spread upon Tabor


You shall each revere your mother and father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.


Its prophets are reckless, faithless persons; its priests have profaned what is sacred; they have done violence to the law.


And now, O priests, this command is for you.


Have we not all one father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our ancestors?


But you have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to stumble by your instruction; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the Lord of hosts,


Then I will draw near to you for judgment; I will be swift to bear witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired workers in their wages, the widow, and the orphan, against those who thrust aside the alien and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.


For God said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.’


So, for the sake of your tradition, you nullify the word of God.


Honor your father and mother. Also, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”


“Pray, then, in this way: Our Father in heaven, may your name be revered as holy.


“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.


You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness. You shall not defraud. Honor your father and mother.’ ”


For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.’


But wanting to vindicate himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”


You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery. You shall not murder. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness. Honor your father and mother.’ ”


Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.


“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I tell you?


“Honor your father and mother”—this is the first commandment with a promise—


and in the wilderness, where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, just as one carries a child, all the way that you traveled until you reached this place.


Do you thus repay the Lord, O foolish and senseless people? Is not he your father who created you, who made you and established you?


“ ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.


If you invoke as Father the one who judges impartially according to each person’s work, live in fear during the time of your exile.
